“How Sweet It Is”

⚡ February 17, 2026 ⚡

If you didn’t make it out to Sweethearts of the Radio last Saturday, we missed you. I have participated in some way with this event for at least the past 18 years, and this was the sweetest one yet.

Why so sweet, you ask? I’m not sure I can put my finger on it. It had some sort of momentum brought on by the following factors:

  • Super excellent volunteers willing to come out on Valentine’s Day
  • Ten local business sponsors with stepped up with financial or in-kind support
  • Two exceptional and sweet musical acts!
  • Great staff and board member support

I stood in the lobby of the Dance Palace greeting folks as they walked in. Lots of hugs and great vibes all around. Folks got up and danced in the aisles. Young families showed up with their well-behaved babies.

The Coastal Scrubbers set the tone. These local musicians, including our own Program Director, Jeff Manson opened the show. Intermission was bustling with folks visiting the KWMbaR and chatting with one another. Mollie O’Brien and Rich Moore were marvelous and fun AND funny!

I think the special sauce was really the great desire for joy and celebration of community in these times. Events are a lot of work, and this one seemed less onerous than others because we were helping to make that special sauce.

And our emcee, Nancy Vayhinger who is the Chair of the KWMR Board put the icing on the cake. At the end of the concert she thanked everyone for coming and invited folks to help put the chairs away. In moments the crowd had stacked and racked the chairs. It was like the good old days, or maybe it’s the good new days.
