Round Up: ”Signs and Signals”

“Signs and Signals”
⚡ February 24, 2026 ⚡
I lived in New England for a spell. Both my parents hail from the northeast and I was born there, so I ventured back for a few years after high school. I was enchanted by the old architecture, the history, the foliage, and lightning bugs.
The first year I was there I was distracted by working at a ski area where snow was welcome, and I was busy learning how to drive on icy roads to get to one of my many part-time jobs. Sledding was fun, too.
I then attended college in Western Massachusetts for a few years. March would arrive, and I would start to expect signs of spring. Nope. No daffodils until mid to late April, kiddo. I would wake up to fresh snow hiding iced puddles that would often take me down.
After deciding that four serious seasons were not in my DNA, I headed to the southwest, which I love, but eventually found myself back on the west coast. In fact, as a child I told people that I was going to live in California. My parents would give me a look and remind me that I had never been to California. Maybe it was the Beach Boys songs, I’m not sure, but here I am!
I have lived in California for 32 years. I started in Southern California and could imagine, when squinting, what it must have looked like to the early explorers. It’s an incredible climate. I remember my first trip to the Bay Area. I drove up from Orange County and thought Menlo Park was a baseball stadium. Having grown up in the Pacific Northwest, the Mediterranean climate of the Bay Area is the perfect compromise.
The naked lady leaves are busting out, the ribes are blooming, the daffodils are looking good and the fava plants are almost knee high. The days are getting longer (well, they are staying the same length, but with less darkness). And the weeds are doing extremely well!
The signs of spring are everywhere! They signal to me that summer is on the horizon!
