Round Up Newsletter: “Does This Thing Work?”

“Does This Thing Work?”
⚡ July 14, 2026 ⚡
I don’t know about you, but with me there are things that I do every day, other things that I do monthly, some quarterly, and then things that happen just once a year. I do ok with the regular occurring items, but when it comes to quarterly, biannually or annually, I sometimes start the task and have a really tough time remembering what the heck I’m doing.
Which is why procedures are so important. I write them up for myself when the process changes for those rare tasks.
Last week, I reached out to the KWMR Backup emergency team to touch base, make sure everyone wants to stay on the team, and give a few quick updates. I also offered some refresher training on starting “Hot Juice,” KWMR’s backup generator.
In fact, we had not turned on Hot Juice for a while, so I asked our esteemed Transmitter Wrangler to fire her up and make sure all is well. James Mohri and Richard Dillman did a full load generator test last Friday, and all is indeed well.
I felt the earthquake that shook Redwood Valley since I was up north when it happened. The cellular phones started buzzing and then our campsite was rocked gently by the quake that shook homes and knocked a bunch of stuff down on June 25th.
It was a stark reminder of the active landscape where we live and play. Things have been pretty mellow of late and we surely don’t want to get out of the practice of preparedness.
In fact, if you are feeling a bit rusty around the whole “go bag” “stay bin” and household preparedness you can head on over to #1 Sixth Street (HHS building) at 7 PM tonight and wrap your head around making a household preparedness plan with Point Reyes Disaster Council Coordinator Roy Pitts. That is happening today, July 14th, but Roy has plans to do monthly courses, so drop him an email at [email protected] for more information. You can hear Jeff Manson’s interview with Roy Pitts HERE.
And here are some reminders about excellent resources that are available for folks to be as prepared as we can. Ready Marin is a great place to start. The Point Reyes Disaster Council also has some great resources. Are you signed up for Alert Marin? Have you opted in to get Emergency Text messages from KWMR? Is your property Fire Safe? Would you like to become a Certified Emergency Response Team member? Do you know who your neighbors are?Â
Thanks for all your support!
