Round Up Newsletter: “Are We Ready?”

Are We Ready?

âš¡ October 27, 2026 âš¡

This past weekend I visited New Mexico with some friends. It was a fun trip with some sightseeing, hanging out and lots of red and green chilli. We managed to dodge the forecasted rain showers with our activities, but when we were tucked into our lodging on Saturday night our phones began wailing.

There was a tornado warning and we were to go to the basement immediately. Not unlike The Alama, there was no basement at the place where we were staying, but it seemed pretty sturdy. We never lost power, and the warning passed without incident, as far as we knew.

The lighting and thunder was impressive and there were heavy rainstorms. The following day we learned that the twister had touched down just three short miles from where we were staying and thankfully, while nobody was injured, there was some pretty severe property damage.

Tornadoes are not unheard of in New Mexico, but I would say, up until now, they have been on the rare side. When I lived in New Mexico in college I remember the big thunder storms, but never a tornado.

Tonight there is a West Marin specific El Nino town hall at the Dance Palace. You can go in person, or join via Zoom and I understand it will be recorded and then we can share the audio with the listeners of KWMR.

I’ll be Zooming in to this presentation for sure. With the unprecedented weather we are seeing worldwide, I know it can be difficult to make massive changes to keep up with climate change, but there are things we can do to be prepared. ReadyMarin is a great resource for preparedness.

Despite the tornado warning it was nice to get away, spend time with friends, and eat some good food and soak in a landscape that I love. A reminder, that with all the terrible news we are bombarded with to pause, and spend some time with the people that you treasure.

Sincerely,
